Reactive power - part of the total power consumed by electromagnetic processes in the load having capacitive and inductive components. It does not perform useful work, causes additional heating of wires and requires the use of an increased power source.

Reactive power refers to technical losses in power grids according to the Order of the Ministry of industry and energy of the Russian Federation № 267 dated 04.10.2005.

Under normal operating conditions, all consumers of electric energy, whose mode is accompanied by a constant occurrence of electromagnetic fields (electric motors, welding equipment, fluorescent lamps, etc.) load the network as an active and reactive components of the total power consumption. This reactive component of power (hereinafter referred to as reactive power) is necessary for the operation of equipment containing significant inductance and at the same time can be considered as an undesirable additional load on the network.

Types of capacitor units and their application

Depending on the existing tasks of client, the optimal solutions may be different types of capacitor units.

For example, non-regulated capacitor units (NRCU) are the best solution in cases where the reactive power of the compensated element of the circuit is known for certain, and compensation is carried out locally (individual compensation). The undoubted advantage of this solution, due to its structural simplicity, is:

  • low cost, as a consequence of the fast payback period of the equipment;
  • increased reliability due to simplicity;
  • reduction of the size of the units;
  • quiet operation of the unit.

Non-regulated units are the optimal solution for individual compensation: asynchronous motors, transformers, industrial pumping equipment and air conditioners.

The regulated capacitor units (RCU) are the optimal solution for group compensation, in the case of a large number of reactive power sources. Individual reactive power compensation in this case may become cost-ineffective due to a large number of equipment, and the best option is to connect the installation, which, depending on the level of reactive load in the network will include the required number of compensation stages. An important advantage of the products of the capacitor plant "Nucon" is the presence in the design of its own capacitors of high-discharge resistors, which allows to improve the quality of compensation not only with a slowly changing load (1 time in 2-3 minutes), but also with a medium-load (1-2 times per minute).

If necessary, a compensation in network with variable reactive load thyristor capacitor units (TCU) are used.

The main advantages of thyristor capacitor units are:

  • High performance of the unit;
  • Minimum time to re-enable the stage;
  • No risk of switching overvoltage;
  • Reduction of losses in lines and power transformers;
  • The increase in available capacitance (kW) of the plant;
  • The lowering of the voltage drop at the enterprise;
  • Absence of moving parts and, as a result, increase of the scheduled maintenance interval;
  • Increase in the service life of capacitors at least 1.5 times;
  • Since the thyristor capacitor unit compensates the reactive power almost instantly, the power transformer operates on an active load, which increases its service life. Static thyristor contactors have no restrictions on the number of switching.

The capacitor unit with thyristors are mainly used on the following sites:

  • Elevators;
  • Port crane;
  • Cable plants (extruders);
  • Pipe plants (plastic);
  • Spot welding machines;
  • Robots;
  • Steel plant;
  • Compressors;
  • Ski lift;
  • 0.4 kV industrial networks of chemical plants, paper mills.
